"Pick Up Your Pet Waste"
Run Time: 60 sec
Outcue: "
...Take Care of Texas — It's the only one we've
got!"
Here's another Take Care of Texas minute. Did you know that there
are currently almost 45 million U.S. households with dogs. And
according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the average dog
produces almost one pound of waste, every day. So where does all
that dog poop go? — Well, it runs off yards and parks and
into storm drains, rivers, lakes, and other sources of drinking
water. Do your part to manage pet waste, which helps keep our
watersheds safe and clean. Simply use a plastic bag to pick up
after your pet. It's quick and easy and there is no mess. When
using a plastic bag, slip it over your hand like a mitt, pickup the
waste, hold the top corner of the bag with your other hand, and
then flip it inside-out and dispose of it in the trash can. No need
to buy special plastic bags for this chore — just reuse the
plastic bread bags, newspaper sleeves, or produce bags you have on
hand. For these and other tips to save money and the environment,

Here's another Take Care of Texas minute. According to the Texas
State Water Plan, single-family residential homes use an average of
69 gallons of indoor water per person per day. At that pace, by the
year 2050 only 75 percent of the projected water demand will even
get met by existing water sources in Texas. Brush up on your water
use. Instead of letting water run while you are brushing your
teeth, run it just to wet and rinse your toothbrush. When shaving,
fill the basin with water instead of letting the water run
continuously. Turning off the water can save four gallons of water
per minute, which adds up to 200 gallons a week for a family of
four. Take a shower instead of a bath. Showers with water efficient
showerheads use less water than a bath. Turn off the water while
you are shampooing your hair in the shower. For these and other

Here's another Take Care of Texas minute. Every year more than 5
million tons of yard trimmings end up in Texas landfills. Besides
saving landfill space, recycling yard trimmings saves homeowners
the work of bagging grass and leaves and hauling them to the curb.
By grasscycling, or leaving the clippings on your yard when you
mow, you create a natural mulch that retains moisture in the soil,
so you'll need less water. Here's another benefit — it also
puts about two pounds of nitrogen per thousand square feet back
into your lawn every year, like a slow release fertilizer that you
get for free. While you don't need a special mower to mulch grass
clippings back onto your lawn, you can simply replace your standard
mower blade with a mulching blade, or cover the mower's outlet
chute. For these and other tips to save money and the environment,

"Mow in the Evening"
Run Time: 60 sec
Outcue: "
...Take Care of Texas — It's the only one we've

Here's another Take Care of Texas minute. Did you know that mowing
your lawn for one hour with a gasoline-powered mower generates the
same amount of pollution as driving your car for four hours? If you
mow later in the day you'll be able to breathe a little easier
knowing your chores are done and you've helped keep the state's air
clean. Emissions from lawn mowers and leaf blowers contribute to
the formation of ground-level ozone. If you mow earlier in the day,
the lawn mower's emissions have more time to combine with sunlight
and form ozone. Mowing later in the day reduces that possibility.
Consider switching to an electric mower which can save you 73
percent in total energy costs. Another option is an old fashioned
push mower that operates pollution free, allows you to mow quietly
in the cool of the early morning, and gives you some exercise too!

Here's another Take Care of Texas minute. Did you know that low
tire pressure on your vehicle can waste up to 5 percent of a tank
of gas? With proper, routine maintenance — such as changing
your oil and filter, checking your tire pressure, and replacing the
air filter, you can reduce your car's emissions and improve your
gas mileage. Saving you up to 35 cents a gallon and help improve
air quality in the process, because when you care for your car, you
care for the air. Vehicle exhaust is a major contributor to air
pollution in communities throughout Texas, and a poorly maintained
vehicle will typically release more emissions than a
well-maintained one. If your check engine light is on, it could
indicate something simple or something severe like an engine
problem. Don't ignore the warning signs — have your vehicle
repaired. For these and other tips to save money and the

Here's another Take Care of Texas minute. You can get more miles
per gallon from your car if you regularly maintain the vehicle.
Simply checking your tire pressure and regularly changing your oil,
you can improve fuel economy. For instance, you can improve your
gas mileage by about three percent by keeping your tires inflated
to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage
by four-tenths of a percent for every one pound drop in pressure
for all four tires. And by using the manufacturer's recommended
grade of motor oil, you can improve your gas mileage by one to two
percent. For example, using a 10W-30 motor oil in an engine
designed to use 5W-30 can lower your gas mileage by one to two
percent. For these and other tips to save money and the

Here's another Take Care of Texas minute. When the gas pump nozzle
clicks off automatically, do you add more gas to round off your
purchase? Or have you ever tried to top off your tank only to
overfill it and end up spilling gas down the side of your vehicle?
The fact is you need extra room in your gas tank to allow the
gasoline to expand. If you top off your tank, the extra gas may
evaporate into the vehicle's vapor recovery system — causing
your vehicle to run poorly and have high gas emissions. Gasoline
vapors are harmful to breathe and contribute to air pollution. Try
to fill up your vehicle's gas tank in the evening to prevent
emissions from building up to form smog during the day. And make
sure you properly tighten the gas cap — otherwise gas will
evaporate from your car's tank. To learn more about how to save
