Backyard Composting

Mulching and composting not only reduce waste, but also benefit your yard and the environment:

  • healthier soil
  • less need for water and fertilizer
  • reduced erosion, runoff, and pollution

The Texas legislature directed the TCEQ to create a program capable of diverting 15 percent of the waste disposed of in Texas through composting. See the Health and Safety Code (Chapter 361 Section 428: Solid Waste Disposal Act, Composting Program). Exit the TCEQ Yard trimmings alone make up over 15 percent of this waste, and another 20 percent of it comes from food scraps, clean wood material, unrecyclable paper, and other easily composted materials.

The TCEQ has developed training programs, publications, and other outreach activities that promote voluntary diversion of these materials at the household level. YardWise is a program designed to increase awareness of the benefits of mulching and composting among the local community.
